Terroir and location

Situated between Beaune and Volnay, Pommard was once the land of the Dukes of Burgundy. Its southeast-facing clay-limestone slopes produce powerful, structured red wines of great character.

In 1210, Eudes, Duke of Burgundy, donated it to the Abbey of Cîteaux. Today, this clos is a monopole of Domaine Jean Monnier & Fils — the estate is its sole owner and therefore the only producer. Located within one of Pommard’s finest Premiers Crus, the walled parcel, planted on clay-limestone soil, yields one of Burgundy’s most structured and long-lived wines.

Tasting notes

Pommard-Grands Épenots combines a deep red-black colour with an intense bouquet of blackcurrant, musk, and game. Its flavours are dominated by firm tannins and vivid acidity, with suppleness emerging only after some ageing.

Food and wine pairing

With its robust body and refined aromas, Clos de Cîteaux calls for richly flavoured dishes such as game or stews. Strong cheeses like Époisses and Munster are equally well matched with its structure and firmness.
